Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has observed that what they want is to empower Parliament. The government would withdraw, at the committee stage, the clauses that required a referendum and hoped to get others passed in Parliament. Addressing the House, he said:

Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala de Silva has challenged the logic behind the stand of the UPFA on the issue of the nominee of the opposition leader. Speaking in Parliament, he said:
