Mahinda Rajapaksa challenges the government’s legitimacy to move a new constitution

Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa has challenged the legitimacy of the current government to introduce a new constitution. He has urged the government to go for a general election.

He was addressing the Constitutional Assembly on Thursday. During his address, Mahinda said:

It is the stance of us that today the government did not have the legitimacy to introduce a new constitution. Instead it should go for a parliamentary election so that people's approval could be obtained for such a move to introduce a new constitution.

There should be legitimacy prior to introducing a new constitution. We doubt if the present government has that legitimacy. They lost the local government elections and they are delaying the provincial council elections. They even went to court to prevent a parliamentary election.

We propose that the government to dissolve the Parliament and go for an election with its draft. You have gone to the courts to stop a General election. The court decision has insulted the Parliament. Don’t mislead the public or the Parliament. Just let us know what you are planning to do.

We should accept that Sinhalese don’t have the right to trample any other race. Consensus is necessary among the races. Don’t establish political hatred. This should be approved by the people. You should hold an election. We will bring our proposals then and we will let the people decide.”
