Speaker Karu Jayasuriya has observed that the withdrawal of five National Freedom Front (NFF) parliamentarians led by MP Wimal Weerawansa had zero impact on the legality and proceedings of the Constitutional Assembly.
He was responding to a query by Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa, who sought a response from the Chair to the letter submitted last month informing of the withdrawal of NFF from the Assembly. He said: "In our letter, we stated that the CA would no longer be valid with our withdrawal, because the resolution adopted in Parliament states that the CA consists of all 225 members. We like to hear the Speaker’s opinion on this matter."
The Speaker stated that his decision is that NFF pulling out of CA had not given rise to any problem and he had obtained legal advice before coming to this conclusion.
