Muslim Ministers who quit portfolios call on Buddhist prelates 700 01
All Muslim Parliamentarians who had resigned from their Ministerial portfolios met with Mahanayake of the Asgiriya Chapter Most Ven. Warakagoda Gnanarathana Thera and the Mahanayake of the Malwatte Chapter Most Venerable Thibbatuwawe Sri Sumangala Thera in Kandy on Tuesday, June 11.

Duirng the meeting, they explained the rason for their collective decision to resign. The chief prelates of three main Buddhist chapters recently requested the former ministers to return to the administration and resume their responsibilities.

Mahanayaka of the Asgiriya Chapter of the Siyam Nikaya, Most Ven.Warakagoda Gnanarathana TheraThe Mahanayake Thera said:

“The Muslim community has been living in Sri Lanka in brotherhood with the Sinhala communityfor centuries and this bond should continue.

We should not forget that we are all humans though we belong to different races and religions. People of all communities should live in harmony irrespective of racial or religious differences.”.

Anunayake of Malwatte Chapter Most Ven.Niyangoda Vijithasiri Thera said

“Muslims have been representing the government since the State Council was in existence in the country. Members of Muslim Community had made many sacrifices for the country from the time of the Portuguese, Dutch and English up to the last Sinhala King.

Former Foreign Minister A.C.S. Hameed represented the Harispattu electorate in Parliament for 48 years and he won the hearts of Sinhala people too.

The Easter Sunday attacks took place when there was an apparent clash between the Legislature and the Executive. Sri Lanka will have to face consequences, as the resignation of Muslim Ministers from the government was not favourable to the country’s image internationally”

After the meeting with the Maha Sangah, Sri Lanka Muslim Congress Leader Rauff Hakeem tweeted that the MPs were elated to have had this opportunity to appraise the Chief Prelates on the reason for their collective resignation.
