Jaffna International Airport declared open

Sri Lanka’s newest international airport, the Jaffna International Airport was declared open at a simple ceremony on Thursday, October 2019. The event was held under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena.

The third international airport was constructed at a cost of Rs. 2250 million in Palali in the Northern Province. The Government of Sri Lanka funded Rs. 1950 million while the Government of India contributed Rs. 300 million for the project which will be completed in three phases. Under the first phase 950 meters in the runway has been carpeted.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, the Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Taranjit Singh Sandhu, Ministers Arjuna Ranatunga, John Amaratunga, State Minister Wijayakala Maheshwaran, Members of Parliament Ravi Karunanayake, Angajan Ramanadan, Mavai Senadhiraja, the Governor of the Norther Province Suren Ragavan, Secretary to the President Uadaya R. Seneviratne and several government officials, Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Major Gen. Shantha Kottegoda, Commanders of Tri-Forces were among the distinguished gathering.
