Parliamentarian Ranjan’s alleged telephone conversations though immoral, unacceptable reveals corruption at top hierchy … Bimal Rathnayake

Bimal Rathnayake

JVP Parliamentarian Bimal Rathnayake has observed that although Parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake’s recording of alleged telephone conversations was immoral and unacceptable, it certainly revealed the true nature of the country including the corrupt nature of top hierarchy of the key sectors such as politicians, officials, judiciary, religious organisations and business sectors.

He was addressing a news conference at the party headquarters in Pelawatte recently. He said:

“There are two sides to Ranjan’s matter. He had adopted unacceptable and immoral methods which cannot be expected from a recognised person. The other side is, it has revealed the deteriorated and corrupt nature of the society.

Edward Snowden and WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange had also done the same thing to reveal undemocratic actions but they adopted proper and acceptable methods to do it whereas Ranjan did the opposite. If Ranjan had done it in an ethical manner after forming a peoples’ movement, it could have been a public campaign such as of Snowden and Assange.

The content of audio tapes shows that every social institution is rotten to the core. I say that all audio tapes should be taken over by the Department of Government Information and kept at a place like the Public Library so that anyone who likes to have access to them can listen to them. Today, they are released in a selective manner to serve some political agendas.

There could be records because we as politicians speak to fellow MPs, but one thing for sure is that we have nothing to fear because we know what we spoke of. We never spoke of underhand deals or of getting culprits released from prisons. None of our MPs have talked to anyone to protect thieves. So, we are not afraid while many others are shivering.

The disclosure of tapes had on the social institutions the same effect as rounds fired by a multibarrel rocket launcher. If those tapes had been leaked in a more responsible manner, they could have created the impact of world famous scandals such as Watergate."
