Every successive govt failed to increase workers’ wages to meet cost of living … Lal Kantha

Lal Kantha

JVP trade union wing leader K.D. Lalkantha has observed that none of the main parties that had governed the country for the past 70 years had given a salary increment to public sector workers to meet the cost of living.

He made this charge addressing the media at the party headquarters in Pelawatte.

He said:

“The public workers should use their vote at the Aug 5 election as an instrument to effect a radical change. We call on the state workers to think carefully of their present plight and think again what they can do to change it. They can vote for the candidates from the NPP and be assured that their vote will help change the prevailing situation.

Public sector workers got their last salary increment, in January 2016. Our trade union movement has been struggling for that increment for years and the increment was won over as a result of that struggle. We had been demanding that salaries should be increased to match the cost of living and all allowances be added to the basic salary. Our struggle was successful and the then Rajapaksa government before the election gave a Rs 3,000 increment to state workers.

The UNP government that came to power thereafter was forced to deliver its promise and gave an increment of Rs 10,000 to each state sector employee. Those are the results of our struggle.

It is only the JVP which has fought for the rights of the workers while other unions and parties have worked according to political agendas. We call on people to think critically and use their vote for their gain."
