20A passed at first reading amist shouts of Yes to 20 and No to 19

The ‘Twentieth Amendmenet to the Constitution’ presented in the House by the Minister of Justice Ali Sabry on Tuesday, September 22 was passed at its first reading amidst protests and shouts of “apita vissa epa” (“we don’t want 20”) and ‘yes to 20’.

SJB parliamentarians were wearing black armbands and badges with ‘No to 20’ printed on them shouted. They also held placards denouncing the 20th Amendment.

Some of them walked to the Well of the House and protested against 20 A while some government MPs too came down in response in support o 20A.

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena was in the Chair. Sergeant-at-Arms Narendra Fernando and his Deputy Kushan Jayaratne were standing beside the Mace during the protest by Parliamentarians.
