Arrest Indian fishermen entering Sri Lanka illegally Premier Mahinda tells Navy

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has given a directive to the Sri Lanka Navy to take into custody Indian fishermen entering the island illegally.

He issued the directive while addressing a meeting at Temple Trees recently discussing the issues of fishing in the North including Indian fishermen entering the Sri Lanka coast.

Premier Mahina said:

“As the COVID-19 epidemic has not been arrested in India, the Indian vessels are mostly entering the Sri Lankan coast and engaging in illegal fishing.

People representing the North Fisheries Societies complained to me that the fishermen in the North are suffering from various tortures and a situation that they can't continue their job.

Here I advised the Sri Lanka Navy to arrest Indian fishermen who are entering the border unnecessarily and continue the law enforcement program.

In addition to this, I ordered the police to enforce the law against those who engage in fishing activities which have become a problem to the fishermen in the Fishermen who have become a problem to the fishermen who have been engaged in fishing jobs in Kilinochchi near Iranamadu lake.”

Minister of Fisheries Douglas Dewananda, Minister of State Kanchana Wijeskara, MP Angajan Ramanadan, Secretary to Prime Minister Gamini Senarath, Director General of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Prasanna Ginige, Secretary to Ministry of Fisheries R. EM. Indu Rathnayake, Inspector of Police C. Dee. Wickramarathne, Director of Navy Operations Rear Admiral Y. N. Jayaratne and a group of government officials and representatives of the Northern Fisheries Union were present at the event.
