Opposition Leader R Sampanthan has stated that the bold step taken by Foreign Minister Karunanayake to resign is commendable.
Addressing the Parliament today Sampanthan stated that he has not yet been found guilty by any court and he is entitled to presumption of innocence as it is his fundamental right. In the past few years there have been several charges of corruption against many but none of those have been dealt with and it is significant that a minister in the present government tendered his resignation today on the basis of certain charges against him which have not yet been proven.
He said:"I commend that bold step. He has done so in the interest of good governance, in the interest of people of this country and the interest of the country itself. He had a set an example which many others could do well to follow."
