JVP to present a draft National Audit Bill as private members’ bill

JVP Parliamentarian the Chairman of COPE Sunil Handunneththi is to present the draft of the National Audit Bill in Parliament next week as a private member’s bill.

According to JVP sources, the Audit Department finds it difficult to carry out its functions appropriately as a result of the failure to get the National Audit Bill adopted in Parliament. The National Audit Bill is a promise made during the last Presidential and General elections but was never presented in parliament. They charge that the Cabinet of Ministers deferred the National Audit Bill from being presented in parliament as ministers from both the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and the United National Party (UNP) thought it conferred too much power on the Auditor General.
