Central Province Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake cast his vote for the local government polls early morning today, February 10. He queued up at the at the polling booth in Anakarika Dharmapala Mawatte today along with Janaka Jala Peruma opposition leader at the Central Provincial Council.


Sri Lanka Muslim Congress candidate S.M.A.Niyas was sworn in as member of the Northern Provincial Council before NPC Chairman C.V.K.Sivagnanam recently. The swearing in ceremony was held at the NPC Secretariat in Kaithady. He has been sworn in to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Councilor Raees.


The 70 th National Independence Day was celebrated at the Jaffna Secretariat on Sunday, February 4. Jaffna Government Agent N.Vethanayagam presided. Governor of the Northern Province Reginald Cooray was Chief Guest. Among other items, there was a cultural pageant depicting Tamil traditions.


Four prisoners were released from the Trincomalee Prison following Presidential Pardon to mark the 70 th Independence Day. Prisoners who served sentence for minor offences or who were remanded for inability pay fines. Three of the prisoners were men, while one was a woman.

A simple ceremony was held on Sunday, February at the Meerakam Mosque in Kandy to mark the 70th Independence Day. The event was held under the auspices of the Federation of Mosques in Kandy town. Chief Guest hoisted the national flag and the Mathrasa students sang the national anthem.
