US President Donald Trump signed an order that immigrant families will be detained together, except in cases where there are concerns about the child's welfare. It would end separation of families. The signing ceremony was held on Wednesday.

The signing of the order by President Trump has been viewed as his bowing down to international pressure and fury over the separation of undocumented parents and children. It was reported that more than 2300 children have been separated from their parents or adult relatives after they illegally crossed the border since May 5.

President Trump said that he had been swayed by images of children who have been taken from parents while they are jailed and prosecuted for illegal border-crossing. He also ordered prioritising immigration cases involving detained families.

He said: "It's about keeping families together. I did not like the sight of families being separated."
